Refuge Seasons
Refuge A “Spilios Agapitos” operates on a seasonal basis and is open each year from May through October.
Due to its high altitude on Mount Olympus, winter brings heavy snowfall and severe weather conditions. Snow accumulation, low temperatures, and avalanche risk make access to the refuge extremely difficult and often unsafe. For this reason, the refuge closes during the final week of October and remains fully secured throughout the winter months. During this period, there is no staff on site and no access to the building or its facilities.
While the E4 path itself is not officially restricted during winter, trekking on Olympus at this time of year is strongly discouraged unless you are highly experienced, properly equipped for alpine conditions, and fully aware of mountain safety procedures. Winter conditions can change rapidly, and self-sufficiency is essential.
As spring arrives and the refuge prepares to reopen in May, you may still encounter snow along parts of the route, particularly after a heavy winter. Snow patches are most commonly found beyond the helicopter pad near the top of the zig-zag section of the ascent. For experienced trekkers, these sections are usually manageable, but care and appropriate footwear are advised.
Each season on Olympus has its own character. Spring often reveals melting snowfields, rushing water and vibrant alpine growth. Summer brings stable trekking conditions and clear views, while autumn offers crisp air and rich forest colours. Whatever the month, the mountain rewards those who approach it with preparation and respect.
Above all, please prioritise safety and good judgement whenever visiting Olympus, at any time of the year.
