Route E4 – Prionia zur Berghütte A (Spilios Agapitos)
Prionia – Spilios Agapitos
The route from Prionia at 1,100 metres to Spilios Agapitos Refuge at 2,100 metres is the most frequently used hiking path on Mount Olympus and forms part of the European long-distance E4 trail. It continues the well-known Litochoro–Prionia route and serves as the main access path to the higher sections of the mountain.
Prionia is the highest point on Olympus that can be reached by car, located approximately 18 kilometres from Litochoro, and offers designated parking areas. This is also where the Enipea River springs originate. A café-restaurant operates here throughout the year, making Prionia a natural starting point and gathering place for hikers. Most of the ascent from this point takes place within dense forest.
Before beginning the hike, it is strongly recommended to make full use of the facilities at Prionia. Public toilets are available, and drinking water can be taken from the spring to refill bottles or flasks. Vehicles may be left in the parking area overnight or for extended periods without issue.
The trail itself is well maintained and clearly marked. Thick stands of pine are interwoven with beech and fir trees, creating a particularly attractive and shaded environment for much of the walk. Along the route there are several natural viewpoints, as well as two convenient rest areas located at approximately one-third and two-thirds of the total distance. These are suitable places for short breaks, and visitors are kindly reminded to take all litter with them.
At roughly the two-thirds point, the path emerges from the forest into a more open section. From here, a series of zig-zags leads up to the final location of the refuge. At this stage, the refuge becomes visible high above, set dramatically on a rocky outcrop. This final stretch can feel demanding, particularly as fatigue sets in, and during the summer months it is fully exposed to the sun. Adequate hydration and sun protection are essential, as ultraviolet exposure is stronger at altitude.
Spilios Agapitos Refuge is situated on a natural plateau and is surrounded by impressive, centuries-old Bosnian pine trees, offering a striking and memorable setting at the end of the ascent.
